Sometimes with all the technology that's available and all the testing and all the screening, we as mamas start to think that knowing all this stuff means that everything is going to be OK. We really want to hang onto that because no mama wants to think about losing a baby, either during pregnancy or after. We're all terrified of it on some level. But I need you to know....that security that we want to feel...it's an illusion. I know that hurts to hear, but don't lose hope. I want to talk to you about how to walk this road of the unknown without fear.

DISCLAIMER -- The audio on this episode is less than desirable! I was driving home and was too excited to wait to record so i did it while in the car. Please forgive the bad audio and road noise.
This past weekend I was honored to be able to attend the first annual Twins / Breech Conference hosted by Nathan Riley, OBGYN of Beloved Holistics in Louisville, Kentucky. I was surrounded by more than 100 midwives and doctors whos entire purpose for being there was to learn more about normalizing vaginal birth for twins and for babies who are breech, AND to practice the skills needed to be able to safely attend these births. There were some absolute legends there. Folks like Dr. Stu Fischblein & Blyss Young of Birthing Instincts, Betty Anne Daviss who is a researcher and midwife from Canada who blazes trails for us, Dr. David Hayes and Rixa Freeze from Breech Without Borders, Gail Tully from Spinning Babies, and so many more! I can't fully process how much I learned and what a lovely and full weekend it was.
This episode was recorded during my drive home so the audio is less than desirable. I hope you can overlook it and forgive me. The episode consists of my three main takeaways from the conference that I think will benefit and encourage you.

Giving birth at home is the best way for most moms to give birth whether they realize it or not. Most moms can have a natural birth safely and comfortably at home given the right preparation and support. But what if I told you that the best part of home birth is not the "birth" part at all....it's other things that might not be quite so obvious. There are many things you have to deal with during hospital birth that you just don't have to worry about at home, so today I am going over some of those things.

For nearly 10 months your baby has been attached to you by the umbilical cord. That cord has been the baby's lifeline, pumping oxygen and nutrients in, and processing waste products back out to your body to get rid of. After birth, its job is seemingly over....but not so fast....there's a reason to let it hang in there just a little bit longer and today we're going to talk about why.
This episode will compare immediate cord clamping and delayed cord clamping. We'll look at the physiological effects of both and decide which one truly is God's way and which one is the medical model thinking it knows better than God's perfect design. The umbilical cord and the placenta are amazing creations of God with very specific but limited purposes, so we'll look at the end of the life cycle of these two things and how they should be managed after birth for the good of your baby.

When you witness a birth that has taken place in it's natural way without intervention, and then you stay around to witness the hours and days after the birth, and then you consider the months before the birth...the beautiful symphony of events that you've witnessed might just overwhelm you. The sheer amount of things that had to go right for any of it to continue to happen is mind boggling. Then when you step back and consider that no human did one thing to make it happen, your mind is blown even more. How can such a symphony be explained? I want to look at that with you today. When you're pregnant, your hair likely thickened into a beautiful mane of hair so glossy and beautiful it might have seemed too good to be true. Sadly, it was. There are hormonal changes during pregnancy that explain why hair thickens the way it does.....and those same hormones also explain the sad reality known as postpartum hair loss. Many women have no idea it's coming and it can be pretty scary, so today we're going to discuss what it is and what, if anything, you can do about it. (Taken from my HouseMidwife article on the same topic from several years back.)

Last week we took a mental walk through nature during the introduction to consider how animal birth looks and we found animals in all sorts of positions, but none were on their backs. This week I want us to go on a little bit of a different mental walk. Let's take a walk through Bible times and consider where birth was happening. Do we find women going to outside facilities to give birth where the professional doctors were? Do we see them with machines and tools around them? Are the rooms full of strangers who the women are told are the "experts" who are there to keep them safe? Or do we see them in the comfort and privacy of their own homes with knowledgeable women surrounding them?

If you go on a walk through nature and happen upon an animal giving birth, what position will you find her in? Will you find her upright, on her side, or on her back? Well, she might be in a number of positions, but I can guarantee you that you won't find her on her back with her legs in stirrups in the air with a bunch of people looking at her naked rear with bright lights shining on her, that's for sure. Granted, we're not animals, but our labor processes are strikingly similar in many ways and there is a reason they birth the way they do. Furthermore, if you leave a woman to labor by herself "in the wild" meaning you don't have "experts" telling her what she should do and you remove a lifetime of conditioning, you will never find her on her back with her legs up in the air...ever. So why is it we give birth the way we do in America? In this episode we're going to look at the history that got us here and we're going to talk about whether or not that is how God intended for us to give birth that way.

Historically speaking, pregnant women have been excluded from clinical trials of new drugs and rightfully so because of the immense ethical concerns of exposing an unborn baby to unnecessary danger. Now -- In our day and time where there is so little respect for unborn life, there is a push to test new drugs on pregnant women, but recently and not so recently there are stories emerging that prove we are better off being very hesitant to jump on board these bandwagons. You probably know a little of what I'm referring to, but maybe not all, so let's get started and I'll fill you in.

Birth is an immensely JOYFUL event. Our culture has conditioned us to view it as a painful, scary event, but it shouldn't be anything of the kind. It is a beautiful rite of passage in which God uses us, the mothers, to create brand new humans. Our medicalized maternity system has turned birth into a list of computerized checkboxes. "Healthy" means good vitals to the neglect of all the aspects of motherhood that no checklist can contain. Childbirth is the birth of a baby, of course, but it is also the birth of a new mother. It should be a beautiful and transformational experience, not a medical checklist complete with machines and technology. Our culture has normalized medical birth. Over the last 100 or so years, somehow we have been convinced that the best way to have a baby is in a hospitaltal with a tube in your arm and your back so you're numb from the waist down and some monitors strapped to your belly while you lay on your back in a bed. Our ancestors would roll their eyes. Anyway -- if you DON'T want that kind of birth, but you are giving birth in the hospital, you're very likely going to face some very real pushback that is going to make it harder for you than it should be. We have become convinced that prenatal nutrition comes from a prenatal vitamin and without swallowing a pill or chewing a pill or gummy, there's no way to be properly nourished during pregnancy. But is this really true? For thousands of years, humanity managed to obtain its nutrition from food. Is that just a thing of the past, or does the food God provided us from the beginning sustain us like it always has? Is bread a "bad guy" that makes us sick? Is gluten a toxic substance that we need to avoid? Stay tuned to have your eyes opened to yet another thing that the world has convinced us is bad that is actually life-giving.
